  • In anticipation for Module 8, do research on the Internet to answer the following question: Do Christians worship images? Please provide a link to the source you use in your answer. You may simply summarize your findings on the topic, but your answer must be carefully thought out and supported by your findings.

This little tidbit is my weekly assignment for Art History Yes, ART HISTORY….not Theological Disscussions 101….so why is it that I have to make a religious statement?  Beside the fact that this question is so open-ended and can be construed in a gazillion different ways…See, there is a problem with this assignment for A R T HISTORY…number one, it doesn’t deal with ART, number two, the professor is a Christian and in the weekly lecture she let her views on Christianity shine through, and through, and through, and…you get my point.  And finally, she is a teacher who thinks that history is an exact science and if a ‘scholar’ says that something is true, it is…no matter what anyone else thinks/says.  I will basically, have to read her mind and find a way to answer that question so that she approves of the answer and it sounds intelligent and is well backed.  So, there goes my week of easy work before Spring Break.  I’m about to print out 8 pages from an online encylopedia and begin reading…yay me…..

I also got my midterm grade in Conceptual Design..I got a B, but seeing as half the class got C’s or F’s I’m pretty proud of that B….hopefully I’ll change it to an A before the semester is over with.

  • Oh honey, I’m sorry.  That blows.

  • actually, it has great relevance to art history.  I will be interested to see what you come up with.

  • as much as i hate to admit it, it does have relevance.  religion used to be life…i think it’s important that your teacher doesn’t impose her personal beliefs on you though…try to convert you or something.  best of luck!

  • Open-ended questions that can be construed a million different ways is probably the point. There is no right or wrong answer – you have to make your point and defend it. I agree with ericjuan, there is definitely relevance to art history there. Religious art makes up a great deal of what is studied in a lot of art history classes.

  • I’m sorry, I have to disagree with the other commenters who said this has relevance–the way that the question is worded is somewhat inflammatory. She could have asked about how religious art was influenced by society, or some such other question, but there are so many “flavors” of Christianity that it is impossible to group them all and say definitively “yes” or “no” to this question. Hey, maybe that could be your theme–this question could be answered either yes or no based on which Christian religious tradition you’re speaking of. But, maybe I’m just a little peeved with the fact that your teacher lets her own religious views come through in an art history class–totally inappropriate in my opinion. Good luck!!
